Breathtaking Milky Way & Perseid Meteors over California

Milky Way & Meteors over California

Milky Way & Perseid Meteors over Little River, California made for an unforgettable night from our cabin near Mendocino. Beneath the dark coastal sky, the galaxy arched overhead while Perseid meteors briefly crossed the frame.

Ten seconds of the turning sky

This is the Milky Way doing what it does best — turning. What you’re watching in ten seconds is actually 41 minutes of the night sky, 86 images compressed into 10 seconds. From our cabin in Little River, just down the coast from Mendocino, the stars wheeled slowly overhead as the earth turned beneath them. It’s a reminder that even when everything feels still, the whole universe is moving — and if you sit still long enough, you get to feel it.

One more streak of luck

This single frame caught another Perseid blazing through our atmosphere — a tiny, brilliant reminder that August’s Perseid meteor shower was still in full swing. It’s the kind of shot you don’t plan; you just keep taking pictures continuously, keep watching, and hope that you capture at least one meteor.
